Grey

“Shit, Amelia.” I scooped her limp body into my arms and carried her to the couch. “I should have known better than to just say something like that out loud.” I settled her onto my lap, arms locking her to my body. “Not after all the years. I had no right to shatter your memories of our past just because I was having a bad moment.”

“A bad moment?” She shook her head, finally looking up at me, watery eyes hanging on mine. “I’m the one that’s sorry. I should have known you wouldn’t just leave. I was so busy being angry I didn’t even think about what else might be going on in your life.”

“There’s no way you could have known. My dad hid his drinking, well, most people thought he was dry. He acted like a damn teenager, always doing it behind closed doors and away from prying eyes.”

“Why didn’t you say anything to me, Grey? All those nights? I could have helped, we could have gone to the police. I know my dad could have helped. Maybe things could have been different.”

“Stop,” I caught her wrists as frustration laced her pretty irises. “Stop getting worked up over me, it’s all in the past. You were there for me, almost every night, you have no idea how much just being around you meant to me back then.” I flipped her wrist, grazing a kiss there. “How much you mean to me now.”

“Grey.” She gulped, tension tightening her muscles. “You knew my dad would help you, maybe you could have come to live with us, or-or--”

I laughed loudly then. “And what--be your new stepbrother?” I slid closer to her ear, her body shuddering as I nipped her neck with my teeth. “I’d be a bad stepbrother, Amelia, I’d spend every day thinking about all the ways I could fuck every beautiful inch of you.”

“Grey Blackwell.” She sank a solid right hook into my left shoulder. “I’m trying to be helpful.”

“Helpful?” I caught her tiny fist before she could punch me again. “You were more helpful then, you know.”

“But if you really loved me then, I can’t help but think you would have told me--”

“Confessed my worst nightmare to the girl I loved? That’s not helpful--or romantic, for that matter. The truth is, you’re the only thing that kept me going. You’re the only one I trusted with my life. I couldn’t bring myself to burden you with my demons.”

“I wanted all of you, Grey, even the dark parts. I would have helped you however I could.”

“What could you have really done? Besides, I didn’t want to bring all that bullshit to your doorstep. You were the only fuckin’ good thing in my damn life. You already were, Amelia, you helped me more because you didn’t know and you couldn’t worry. You radiate so much love, you blinded me with it.”

“Grey--” She slumped against my chest, wet tears dampening my t-shirt.

“Amelia Weaver, trust me when I say some burdens are too heavy to carry.
